The doll is so beautiful with braided hair tied with pink ribbons and a lovely pink dress as described in the story. The shoes are sandals and not the black button up boots described in the story. The book is not for very young children because of the violent acts contained in it but for children aged 10 and up it is a very good read. The resources in the back of the book also point the reader to more documented information. I would have liked to see more books in this series because there is a lot more to to be learned about the way freed slaves lived. I would love to have a blue cloak and bonnet and a green cloak and bonnet and a childs mourning outfit for this doll as well.
